Traumatic brain injury impacts more than a million people yearly

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, about 140 individuals in the U.S., including in West Virginia, pass away as a result of brain injury each day. A traumatic brain injury is a bump, jolt or blow to a person's head that disrupts the individual's brain function. These types of injuries impact about 1.7 million individuals each year.

More than 50,000 people pass away every year as a result of traumatic brain injury. In addition, 275,000 individuals are hospitalized, with the other 80 percent of injury victims being treated and released. Brain injuries cost the economy in the United States $60 billion back in 2001, and they made up more than 30 percent of deaths related to injury in the U.S.

How severe a person's brain injury is can play a huge role in his or her physical and mental capabilities. Consequences include disturbances to the person's personality and neurocognitive effects. However, the chief complaint among individuals with brain injury is the loss of memory. This type of injury may also impair an individual's ability to focus.

A traumatic brain injury can take a toll on a person emotionally, physically and mentally. Fortunately, if a person's injury was caused by the negligence of another individual in West Virginia, the injured party has the right to seek to hold the allegedly at-fault accountable in civil court. Liability needs to be established in a manner that satisfies the court before claims for damages will be determined. A successful claim may lead to monetary damages that can help to cover medical costs and other losses related to the brain injury.
