Girl Suffers Dog Bites After Being Attacked by Pit Bulls

Dog attacks in West Virginia unfortunately can cause not just physical suffering but also emotional distress to victims. One girl in a recent out-of-state case was transported to the hospital after suffering from dog bites. The incident occurred on a Monday.

One witness told authorities that he saw a couple of pit bull dogs start to chase the 10-year-old at about 3 p.m. The girl was walking with some friends at the time. The dogs are said to have viciously attacked the girl and knocked her to the ground. The witness said the dogs then climbed onto her and kept attacking.

Officials said the child was bitten on her right arm; in addition, the left side of her body was scratched. She was eventually able to stand up and flee to her home, after which the witness chased the animals away using a shovel. The girl suffered minor or moderate injuries as a result of the dog attacks. The dog that bit the girl belonged to a 19-year-old woman, who said she also cared for the other pit bull. The woman was charged with allowing a dog to be at large (two counts) and having a dog with no license (one count).

The woman facing misdemeanor charges in connection with the dog bites may also face a liability lawsuit filed the family of the girl who was bit. This is because the girl’s family has the right to pursue the reimbursement of monetary damages sustained in the dog attacks. In a successfully litigated suit, awarded damages may help to cover hospital bills and other costs resulting from this type of incident in West Virginia.
