Brain Injury Victims Might Receive Help From Stem Cell Therapy

Injury to the brain can have a negative impact on a person’s life in West Virginia, such as causing mental confusion and even difficulty sleeping. However, a clinical trial was recently completed that involved using cellular therapy for treating brain injury. With this therapy, in which a person’s own stem cells are used, the neuroinflammatory response of the body can be dampened, and the brain’s tissue can be preserved.

A researcher recently received an award of almost $7 million from the government to study the efficiency and safety of stem cell therapy in patients with traumatic brain injury. Part of the focus of the study is whether structural improvements in the brain occur. Right now, few therapies are currently available for treating traumatic brain injury, but the stem cell therapy currently being researched may provide a new treatment avenue.

About 1.7 million people in America suffer a traumatic brain injury each year. Of these individuals, 275,000 end up being hospitalized, while 52,000 passes away. Traumatic brain injury contributes to one-third of all deaths related to injuries in the U.S. The economic impact of the psychosocial, physical, and cognitive deficits tied to traumatic brain injury is estimated to be $60 billion.

Sometimes brain injury is the result of the negligence of another party — for instance, another West Virginia driver’s carelessness on the road. In this situation, the injured person has the right to file a personal injury claim against the reportedly at-fault party, pursuing damages. Liability needs to be established, based upon a showing of negligence, before claims for damages will be decided.
