Traumatic brain injury can impact daily life

Head injuries can quickly cause one's functional, life and mental abilities to change dramatically. Traumatic brain injury happen when the brain strikes the skull, which can occur due to a fall or a motor vehicle accident. Unfortunately, brain injuries can happen at any age and just about any place. Many TBI victims live in West Virginia.

Signs of traumatic brain injuries may become apparent anywhere from a few months to a year following the injury. Symptoms that are worth watching out for include lack of sleep. Other signs are irritability as well as an unexplainable mood change.

Additional signs of brain injuries are short-term memory loss, forgetfulness and frequent headaches. Brain injuries may also prevent the ability to do tasks that were once routine, such as balancing checkbooks, making grocery lists and even picking up items around the home. Not being able to complete these daily tasks can lead to feelings of hopelessness, frustration or anger when brain injuries are present.

Sometimes a brain injury is the result of the carelessness of another party. For instance, a West Virginia property owner may not have maintained safe property conditions, or another driver on the road caused a car accident. In these situations, the party who has suffered a traumatic brain injury as a result may be entitled to file a lawsuit against the allegedly responsible party, seeking the reimbursement of monetary damages. A preponderance of the evidence is necessary to establish liability before claims for both economic and noneconomic damages will be decided.
