Spinal cord injury patients may benefit from using special bikes

Injury to the spinal cord is typically linked to physical impairments in the long term. Unfortunately, these impairments may lead to psychological and social complications that have a negative impact on a patient's quality of life in West Virginia and other states. However, recent research indicated that special bikes may help to improve the quality of life of those suffering from spinal cord injury.

Functional electrical simulation cycling systems are bikes that enable people with no or little voluntary movement of the legs to pedal devices known as ergometers. These devices are essentially leg-cycles that remain in place. The device was used in a race in another country back in 2016.

During the international race, known as CYBATHLON, individuals who had disabilities used such devices as well as robotics. Patients pedaled their ergometers using implantable devices that selectively and repeatedly activated the necessary muscle groups. The use of the bike with the implantable device is believed to have earned one of the race participants a gold medal.

Thanks to modern technology, coping with spinal cord injury is becoming easier in some ways for patients in West Virginia and elsewhere. In some situations, these injuries resulted from another person's negligence -- for instance, maybe someone else caused an accident due to driving while distracted. In this case, a personal injury claim may be filed against the allegedly negligent person, seeking damages. A successfully litigated suit may lead to a monetary award that may help the spinal cord injury victim to cover his or her medical costs and other injury-related expenses.
