Brain Injury May Lead to Mental Health Problems

Injuries to the brain can easily happen as a result of serious accidents, such as motor vehicle collisions, in West Virginia. However, these injuries leave more than just physical scars. Research shows that a brain injury can also affect a person’s mental health long term.

Scientists have long recognized that brain injuries can cause possibly dangerous side effects, including dizziness, blurred vision, and confusion. However, not much attention has gone to the fact that these types of injuries can also cause people’s emotions to change. In fact, those who suffer from traumatic brain injuries often develop anxiety and depression as they recover from their injuries.

A study back in 2004 revealed that up to 33 percent of traumatic brain injury patients appeared to be depressed during the recovery period, and this figure increased to around 42 percent one year later. The risk of depression is also higher for those who suffered mood disorders prior to their injuries. The reason depression can be a major problem following brain injury is that dysfunction in the brain — for example, forgetfulness and decreased concentration — may lead to lower self-esteem and feelings of hopelessness.

Unfortunately, sometimes, a brain injury may happen due to the carelessness of another person in West Virginia. For example, maybe a driver’s decision to text and drive caused another motorist to suffer injuries to the brain in a severe accident. In this situation, the brain injury victim may choose to file a personal injury claim against the driver who caused the crash. If the victim is successful, he or she may receive a monetary award that might help with addressing both past and future medical expenses associated with his or her injuries.
