Spinal cord injury may stem from car accident

The spinal cord serves as the chief communication pathway between the nervous system and the brain. Unfortunately, in a serious car accident in West Virginia, this pathway can easily be injured. As a result, a person who suffers a spinal cord injury may experience motor and sensory functional deficits underneath the injury area, and this can cause serious disability. Fortunately, researchers have found a way to help spinal cord injury victims by using the grafts of an adult spinal cord.

Researchers recently transplanted these types of grafts into an adult host's lesion sites, with the goal being to enhance the individual's locomotor function. They discovered through the treatment that it helped to promote motor function recovery. The positive results were uncovered 12 weeks following graft transplantation.

The research is unique in that past research studies focused specifically on embryonic tissue transplantation rather than on the use of adult grafts. Researchers are hopeful that the adult graft transplantation method highlighted in the recent research study can be used for the future treatment of spine injury victims. This news may provide hope to those struggling with spinal cord injuries.

However, one of the major challenges that a spinal cord injury victim may face following a severe car accident is covering the cost of extensive medical treatment for his or her injuries. Fortunately, if the car accident was the result of another person's negligence in West Virginia, the victim may file a personal injury claim against him or her, seeking damages. If the victim is successful, he or she may receive a monetary award that might help with addressing his or her losses stemming from the crash.
