For many people, peanut butter or some other form of nut butter is a staple in their diet. As a good source of protein, adults and children enjoy it. Unfortunately, a recent voluntary recall indicates that some people could potentially become very ill if they eat a defective product from one company. The products were sold across the country and could potentially affect people in West Virginia.
The Food and Drug Administration alerted nSpired Natural Foods Inc. to the issue after conducting random tests. The tests discovered that the peanut butter and other nut butter products may have been contaminated by salmonella. Salmonella is a potentially dangerous bacterium that can cause a myriad of symptoms, including vomiting, nausea and fever, among others.
The recall affects over 40 batches of product. The bacteria have been known to cause serious illness or death for some people who may be particularly susceptible to it, including the elderly, people with a weak immune system and small children. Four cases have been reported at this time, but the severity of the cases and current condition of those affected is unclear at this time.
Consumers in West Virginia have a certain degree of trust when they purchase a product. Unfortunately, a defective product — as seems to be the issue here — can cause serious harm to a person. Anyone seriously impacted by a contaminated product has the option of pursuing legal recourse in a civil court. In many cases, plaintiffs have been awarded with damages to cover their expenses, including lost wages, medical bills and pain and suffering.
