A person who suffers from a spinal cord injury as a result of an accident in West Virginia may lose his or her physical independence due to the inability to move his or her limbs. One may also experience issues such as the loss of feeling. However, according to researchers, human stem cell treatment may be able to help spinal cord injury victims regain some of the function they have lost.
Research has shown that patients who had lost feeling and function in their hands and arms were able to regenerate some nerve fibers as a result of transplanted stem cells. These nerve fibers could return a patient’s sense of touch. These stem cells developed in different types of nervous system-specific cells and acted like a bridge, permitting the growth of nerve fibers into a patient’s spinal cord.
In the recent research, malfunction and tumor development did not appear to take place; both of these are concerns associated with the use of stem cells. A spinal cord injury often results in sensory loss as well as chronic pain and paralysis. Even though surgery may help to restore some of a person’s muscle function, little treatment previously has been available for addressing the loss of sensory perception.
A spinal cord injury may easily happen in a vehicle accident caused by a negligent individual. It may also occur if a person slips and falls on another person’s property in West Virginia — property that was not appropriately kept up by the property owner. In these types of situations, a victim has the right to file a personal injury claim against the allegedly at-fault party, seeking damages that — if awarded –could help cover his or her related medical expenses.
